Krystal Hughes knew exactly what she wanted to do when she arrived as a first-generation college student at WVU. What she wanted was something no one had ever done at the university. After 10 years of life as a college student, she has her PharmD and PhD from the WVU School of Pharmacy. While pursuing her PhD she was published for her advancements in cancer research.

The goal of each Project MUSHROOM session is to reach those most marginalized from society. Learners provide unsheltered community members with the basics of care including food, water, clothing, and basic medical intervention. Most importantly, learners offer a gentle hand, a warm smile, and a witness to their dignity as fellow human beings.  

This long-standing program brings together medical, nursing, dental, social work, and other health professional volunteers on "street rounds.” Learners travel on foot to those places where they are needed most: along the rivers and creeks, down the back alleys of downtown, and under the bridges.
