Greenland’s ice sheet—the second largest in the world after Antarctica—covers nearly 80% of the island, and it’s melting faster than expected. Witness these dramatic changes on Nova Southeastern University’s Greenland fact-finding expedition, where experts guide participants to visualize the immense scale of Greenland’s ice loss and reveal how meltwater accelerates glacier retreat.

From a helicopter's vantage point, explore meltwater streams growing into rivers, and moulins—vertical shafts in the ice—pouring water deep into the ice sheet and toward the ocean. Melting rates in Greenland have increased by 30% over the last three decades, creating exponential change that can impact the globe.

Through NSU Ocean and the NSU Rising Seas Institute, Nova Southeastern University is helping communities understand, plan, and adapt for the future to build more resilient coastlines. Learn more about NSU’s Greenland fact-finding expeditions and how you can support the mission to foster healthier seas.

Greenland’s Rapid Glacial Melt from an Aerial View | NSU Rising Seas Institute

    Nova Southeastern University

    February 5, 2026 12:24 pm

Greenland’s ice is melting faster than ever—and to understand how this rapid rate of change will affect sea-level rise, the NSU Rising Seas Institute is traveling to remote locations where the ice is receding and disappearing.

Through NSU’s Greenland fact-finding expeditions, participants cross epic terrain, fly across glaciers, and travel by boat to experience up-close landmarks of the dramatic changes driven by melting ice. On this outing, the expedition travels across glacial moraines in ATVs to approach a receding glacier. Participants witness epic landforms of gravel and rock left behind as ancient glaciers retreat farther inland. What nature once moved slowly over millennia is now accelerating, reshaping Greenland’s terrain and contributing to global sea-level rise.

Nova Southeastern University is a leader in the fight for climate readiness and coastal resilience, working to understand, plan, and adapt for our oceans’ future amidst sea level rise. Learn more about NSU’s Greenland fact-finding expeditions and how you can be part of a sea change.

Chasing a Receding Glacier in Greenland | NSU Rising Seas Institute

    Nova Southeastern University

    February 5, 2026 12:24 pm

Along Greenland’s coast, glaciers meet the sea—and paint a picture of rapid change. Join Nova Southeastern University’s Greenland fact-finding expedition as participants travel north by boat from Ilulissat to Eqi Glacier, one of Greenland’s most dramatic calving glaciers. Towering walls of ice—some the size of skyscrapers—break away and crash into the ocean in a process known as calving.

As warming temperatures accelerate ice loss, the hundreds of glaciers flowing from Greenland’s central ice sheet toward the sea are releasing massive icebergs. These calving events are a visible reminder of how Greenland’s melting ice contributes to global sea-level rise.

Through the NSU Ocean and the NSU Rising Seas Institute, Nova Southeastern University is advancing research, education, and solutions to help communities understand and adapt to rising seas—from the Arctic to Florida’s coastlines. Learn more about NSU’s Greenland fact-finding expeditions and how you can support the mission to foster healthier seas.

Icebergs Break Away at Greenland's Eqi Glacier | NSU Rising Seas Institute

    Nova Southeastern University

    February 5, 2026 12:24 pm

The Greenland ice sheet is the second-largest ice mass in the world, containing enough ice to raise global sea level by about seven meters—and it is rapidly melting. The NSU Rising Seas Institute, part of Nova Southeastern University’s oceanographic programs, leads unforgettable Arctic adventures that reveal the reality of sea level rise in Greenland.

With opportunities to explore million-year-old glaciers and learn from expert oceanographers, including NSU Rising Seas Institute Director John Englander, the experience crystallizes the urgency of sea level rise for our world—and inspires action needed to plan and adapt for the future.
